Netflix has done a pretty good job making some animes we all enjoy. Others are … questionable! But none the less Netflix got some anime shows we don’t mind binge-watching. So let’s look a bit to the history of Castlevania and to Season 3 of Netflix’s Castlevania.
Castlevania was originally an action-platformer video game developed and published by Konami for the Family Computer Disk System video game console in Japan in September 1986. It was ported to cartridge format and released in North America for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in May 1987 and in Europe in 1988. It was also re-issued for the Family Computer in cartridge format in 1993. Nowadays its a “simple” side-scroller video game but at the time it was pretty cool. The story was great and to fight the demons and minions of the evil count Dracula it was fun.
Players control a character named Simon Belmont, who has entered Castlevania to defeat the vampire, Count Dracula. But we will get to the story of the game in a minute. It’s the first game in Konami’s Castlevania video game series, and was developed in tandem with the MSX2 game Vampire Killer, which was released a month later and follows the same premise, but features different gameplay mechanics. Castlevania was succeeded by an NES sequel, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, and an NES prequel, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. Super Castlevania IV, which follows the same setting, was released in 1991 for the Super Nintendo. A remake of the game for the Sharp X68000 home computer was eventually re-released for the PlayStation as Castlevania Chronicles in 2001.
So who is Simon Belmont? He was the heir to the renowned Vampire Killer and of the Belmont clan and became the most famous vampire hunter. He was born around the year 1669. Simon grew up hearing stories of his great ancestors who had defeated Dracula, along with those who helped them. As he trained in the ways of the whip, he would often wonder how he compared to these legendary warriors.
At the age of 22 in 1691, he would be given the opportunity to prove himself worthy of his family’s legacy. On Easter Day, 100 years after he was defeated by Christopher Belmont, Count Dracula had returned. He was reawakened by a dark order of humans on Easter Day during a dark mass in an abandoned monastery.
Simon was determined to end the threat of a new reign of terror, and entered Dracula’s Castle alone to face the Count. Simon slew Dracula’s servants and then faced off against Dracula himself as his ancestors had. Unable to kill him in the battle and unbeknown to Simon at the time, Dracula had managed to place a curse on a wound he inflicted on Simon’s back… Now I don’t want to ruin all the fun!! Especially for the fans who haven’t noticed the year of the game and the year of the Netflix series!! Or for those young people that have never played the actual game and enjoyed the story so far.
Netflix converted the successful video game into an animated series. The first two seasons adapt the 1989 entry Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse and follow Trevor Belmont, Alucard and Sypha Belnades as they defend the nation of Wallachia from Dracula and his minions.
The series was originally planned as a film, developed by producer Kevin Kolde and his company Project 51. Kolde had a contract for a script with writer Warren Ellis in 2007; the project entered development hell until about 2015, when Adi Shankar boarded the project and it was picked up by streaming service Netflix. Powerhouse Animation Studios joined the team and production commenced. Its art style is heavily influenced by Japanese anime and Ayami Kojima’s artwork in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night with the production team including staff members who worked in the Japanese anime industry. The series premiered on Netflix on July 7, 2017, and was renewed for an expanded second season of eight episodes on the same day; the second season premiered on October 26, 2018. A ten-episode third season was greenlit by Netflix and released on March 5, 2020.
Now that we got all the formalities out the way. Meaning Netflix spent the time creating the first 2 seasons basing it on the game. I’m hoping that Netflix will kind of start giving this character more story before he has a son… named Simon… O Sh*t!! I spoiled it for the young people! Guess you guys are going to have to play the games now if you go to the top of the blog I’ve linked games at Amazon that you can maybe purchase. Click, buy, play, enjoy!
Update to the Article:
This show is the shit! It’s been some years. More seasons came out and every season it was just better and better. It would be great if they continued the story with his kids. Now the 3rd and last season have been released and it ended perfectly. The artwork was perfect and the story was serious with jokes in between the drama. This show is not for the kids if you don’t want them to watch people get ripped up by monsters, the gore is a bit much for the young ones. But I am interested if you can take a whip and pop an eye out a man’s skull!!
