Drawlines Misfits: Venom

Tom Hardy is the type of actor to give it his all. Whether it’s bulking up to play Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises,” racing bad guys at the dessert “Mad Max: Fury Road,” Being a Mobster playing British twins in “Legend” or spending time alone in a car for “Locke,” He never half-asses his work no matter what that work is. But how is he in a movie like this?

Let’s just get it out the way now, this Venom is way better than the one Toby Maguire had to deal with back in the day. I mean 3D Venom just works so much better. Also, we can see the larger than life Venom unlike the skinny 6 ft Venom in the old SpiderMan 3 movie. Thats how Venom should be portrayed so I’m glad they finally got it right. Seriously, Venom can make his own pointy object to stab Spider-Man with. Why is he picking it up from the floor?!

I’m not sure but as far as I know, Venom is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So whatever happens here doesn’t really matter. But then again… I haven’t really seen many movies taking place in San Francisco. If possible they can squeeze little news reporting of aliens somewhere in the Marvel Universe movies like SPIDER-MAN!!! But we will see.

The movie was built on dark humor. Ya, you’ll see regular jokes here and there but for someone like Eddie Brock and Venom, they tend to swarm around those types of jokes for the most part which I find hilarious. The movie was put together nicely but without Spider-man it’s an awkward movie to play. I do understand why they did it though. Let’s face it with Spider-Man in the eyes of the fans getting better and better per movie made by Disney and Marvel, Sony is stuck with their thumbs up their butts wondering why their Spider-man versions didn’t do as well. Even though Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield did a fantastic job playing their roles Marvel is the one that is hitting these home runs. So taking a character close to Spider-man would be the next logical movie to make. Don’t quote me on it this is my logic about the whole thing so far. But we will have to see.
Tom Hardy plays a perfect Eddie Brock, he is really good at making you feel like he is shit out of luck and now with this Venom attached he is even more confused. He does remind me a bit like the 90’s Spider-Man’s Eddie Brock. This is very hard to tap into without the wallcrawler running around messing his day up!
One of the many changes in the original comic storyline is a business, not NASA, called the Life Foundation with military contracts and they sent astronauts including J. Jonah Jameson’s son to go get this weird ooze. But not one, like in the comics, I think 4 canisters full of ooze, one being Venom of course. Riot was the main villain in the movie. The fights I have to say are a lot to take in but at the same time what I was hoping for. It’s exactly how I thought a creature like this should fight.
We will just have to see if Venom will become something more. The comicbook art has really grown since the 90’s and the art styles and creative way of presenting these characters have really grown over the years.
